Small Laundry Room Tips and Ideas

The right design can make a small laundry area feel like a big space, whether you have a windowless or underground space.

To keep the space from feeling cluttered, use light and neutral colors, and add plenty of natural light.

Install a counter above the appliances to maximize your storage options and leave extra room for folding clothes as they come out of the washer.

The space above the washer also allows for a clothes rod, which is perfect for hanging delicate items and storing detergents or other cleaning products.

Custom shelves are a great option for laundry rooms that have limited space. These can house everything from lone socks to dryer sheets and keep them off the floor.

Elevate cabinets in a narrow laundry room with molding for a designer look that will increase the perceived size of the space. Paint the cabinet fronts a darker shade than the rest of the wall for a dramatic effect.

Organize a narrow laundry room with a stacked washer-and-dryer set to maximize efficiency. Stacked models occupy less space than front-loaders, making them more accessible to people with disabilities.

Consider installing a dryer with a raised base to eliminate bending and stooping when loading and unloading. Then, fold the dryer down after each use to conserve space and reduce electricity consumption.

Using wallpaper with a large print creates the illusion of larger rooms, but if you have a small space, opt for a linear or vertical pattern. These will draw attention to the space, but can be easily removed if you need more room.
